Family Surname
The use of a family name dates back to around the year 1000, at a time when family names were being introduced throughout Europe. Before that time, the Nowlans belonged to a clan whose territory extended over parts of present-day Carlow and Wexford counties. It is indeed known that the Nowlans are descended from a famous warrior named Eochaidh Fionn who lived in the 2nd century. “The O' Nuallains were princes of the Foharta, now the Barony of Forth in the County Carlow, Ireland. In pre-Norman days their chiefs held high office under the Kings of Leinster. In Irish, the name O' Nuallain means descendant of Nuallan, the word Nuallan means a shout or cry. The name was anglicized O' Nowlan, Nowlan, and Nolan. To this day, Nowlan (Nolan) is among the forty most numerous names in Ireland. |
